Cross-domain structural pattern
Protein production involves delayed multi-step process (transcription, translation, folding, oligomerization). Delay is distributed (noisy) due to stochastic process durations. Increasing delay noise dramatically stabilizes metastable states in bistable circuits. Mean residence times in metastable states increase with delay distribution width. Distributed delay prevents unwanted switching caused by small fluctuations while allowing controlled transitions.
